Living in Cullman or Winston county most of my life surrounded by some of the best fishing and hunting land in the world, you would think I would fish and hunt a lot. Unbelievably I don’t. I have gone a few times and enjoyed it, but it is not a consistent part of my life. However, for those of you who know me, know that I love all kinds of motorsports racing. From the time I was a little kid to today, if I go to any type of racetrack, the moment I hear a racecar engine when I get there I smile. It could be a big track like Talladega or to the small, short track I go to in Sayre, I physically can’t help but smile when I hear the engine. Don’t even get me started about the smell (love it).
I get asked a lot why I love racing so much and I have all kinds of reasons, but truth be told, the main reason is because of my dad. If the sun was up, he was working. I can’t count how many times I heard the phrase “burning daylight” trying to get things done. However, when it got too dark to work it was time to do something fun and the racetracks would have lights. As a kid, dad and I would go to the short tracks in Birmingham, Huntsville and mostly Sayre or even the drag strip over in Baileyton. We would take turns choosing who was going to win. We would spend the night picking on each other when the car we chose had a bad night. Racing became a time to spend with my dad and as a result I fell in love with it.
It is funny how spending time doing something makes you fall in love with it. I remember as a kid, I would read my Bible because that was something I was just “suppose” to do. Now it is something I love to do. Understanding more and more each time as I learn how the words apply to my life every day. The more time I spend reading the Bible, the closer I get to my heavenly Father. I get the same smile I mentioned above when He shows me something in the Bible that I had not seen before. I’ll be the first to admit that there are some parts of the Bible that are hard to understand. That is okay. While I know a lot about racing, I don’t know everything and still get enjoyment out of it. You may not understand everything in the Bible, but I can promise you that you can still get guidance out of it.
Challenge: How much time are you spending on something you love? Does that “something” love you as much or more?
Reminder: I love you but God loves you more.
